Sri Lanka’s Economic Crisis, the Twibbonize Frames Addressed to President Rajapaksa

In the midst of the economic crisis, Sri Lanka seems to be facing some other problems in political and government affairs. The country is struggling to pay for imports of fuel and other goods because of a shortage of foreign exchange, which has exacerbated its worst economic crisis since independence from the UK in 1948 reported by BBC News.

The public anger then has reached a new high when the power cuts lasted around half a day and rolled. The spontaneous public protests even have continued against shortages of essential goods, food, medicines, and fuel as well.

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka intensified after all 26 ministers of Rajapaksa’s cabinet stepped down, as reported by hindustantimes.com. Moreover, Sri Lankan president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa sacked his brother and finance minister Basil Rajapaksa. The only one who stayed in the government is Rajapaksa’s brother, the prime minister, Mahinda. So, the president needs to induct new faces and try to stabilize his government.

It all happens when public anger emerged after Sri Lanka’s president declared a state of emergency. Quoted from hindustantimes.com, thousands of people defied a nationwide rule of a weekend curfew on Sunday and a ban on social media sites such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter, which was set to halt the protests and has been lifted then. However, public protests across the island of Sri Lanka happened to demand the ouster of the Rajapaksa family. With all of that, the Twibbonize frame aimed at Gota emerged and looks like the crowd has begun.

As the frames above can be used from around the world with Twibbonize, demonstrations against the Sri Lankan government have also happened in several other countries by the Sri Lankan diaspora.

Quoted from Tamil Guardian, the Sri Lankan diaspora has staged protests in London, New Zealand, Australia, the USA, and Toronto among numerous countries all over the world as well as in Sri Lanka to express solidarity against the Sri Lankan government’s failure to address the current crisis.

All of the frames show that the masses are against the “government’s failure” as the public gets angry at the fact that this presidential government will remain in power. The protesters pointed out that the president and his family should be blamed for the situation in the country. Currently, the anti-government continues their activities throughout the world, and the hashtag #gohomegota is even trending in variations across the globe with or without the Twibbonize frames.
